Words or less party game
The words or less game gives one clue-giver a strict budget of spoken words to make their team guess a list of target words. CardYard generates the target words and counts every clue word you spend, so you can run a 15, 20, or 25 word round in any browser without printing anything.
Use this guide
One player is the clue-giver and sees a list of target words. Their team has to guess every target, but the clue-giver may only spend an agreed number of spoken words across the whole round. Say the budget out loud before you start: 15 words or less is the tightest common setting, 20 is the balanced one, and 25 gives room for longer descriptions.
Split into two teams and pick a clue-giver. Generate a word list, agree on the clue budget, and start a timer if you want extra pressure. The clue-giver describes targets while a teammate counts every word spoken. When the budget runs out, the round ends and you score whatever the team guessed correctly.
The budget is the whole game. A 15 word budget forces single-word clues and rewards teams who already share references. A 20 word budget lets the clue-giver set up one or two targets properly. A 25 word budget suits younger players, mixed groups, and longer word lists where pure single-word clues would stall.
The simplest scoring is one point per target guessed inside the budget. For a longer night, alternate clue-givers so every player takes a turn, and play to a fixed number of rounds rather than a fixed score. Some groups award a bonus point for clearing the full list with words left over.
Share your screen so only the clue-giver sees the list, or open the generator on your phone and keep it off camera. Everyone else mutes, listens, and unmutes to guess. The counter works the same way whether the group is on a couch or on a call.
Most groups ban saying any part of the target word, ban gestures, and count filler words like um against the budget. Decide before the first round whether repeated words count once or every time, because that single rule changes the difficulty more than anything else.
A printed list runs out and gets memorized after a few plays. A generator gives a fresh set every round, lets you match the difficulty to the room, and takes a custom theme so you can build a list around your friend group, a holiday, or a work event.
Prompt starters
Use a list as a starting point, then open the game when you want the round to run itself.
Before you start
At least two, and it works best with four or more so you can run two teams. One player gives clues, the rest guess, and someone tracks the spoken word count.
Start at 25 words. Once the group understands that single-word clues are usually the best value, drop to 20 and then 15 for tighter rounds.
That is a house rule. Most groups count every spoken word including um and uh, which is what makes tight budgets genuinely hard. Agree on it before the first round.
Yes. Take turns as clue-giver and track how many targets each of you can land inside the same budget. It works as a quick two-player warm-up.
No. CardYard is an independent generator for the same limited-clue party format. We supply target words and a clue counter in the browser; you bring the group and the house rules.
