Balanced party mode
The 20 Words or Less game is the balanced setting for mixed groups. CardYard starts you with seven targets and a hard twenty-word counter: enough room to recover from a miss, but still tight enough to punish wandering clues.
Strategy for this preset
Seven targets leave roughly two words each plus a six-word reserve. Open with concise associations, then spend the reserve on whichever targets stall. This keeps the round strategic without making every clue a single word.
Use five concrete targets and two harder ones. The easy words create momentum while the difficult pair gives the clue-giver a reason to manage the remaining counter instead of reading clues at the same pace.
Run the first round at twenty, then move strong teams down to ten or give new players twenty-five. Keeping the target list style stable while changing only the clue limit makes the difficulty adjustment obvious and fair.
Worked example
Seven targets cleared in thirteen spoken words, leaving seven words for retries.
Before you play
It allows short two- or three-word clues while preserving enough scarcity to reward planning.
Seven is the preset. Drop to five for younger players or increase to eight for a harder round.
Yes. Count every spoken word every time it is said unless your group agrees on a different house rule.
