Three ways to play Pictionary online

The same draw-and-guess game works on one shared screen, on a video call, or across every phone in the group.

One screen, free

Draw at the top of this page. The word hides when you start, the timer runs, and Got it scores the point. Pass the phone or tablet to the next drawer.

On a video call

Read your word, tap Start drawing, then share your screen on Zoom, Google Meet or Teams. Everyone watches the sketch and shouts guesses on the call.

A Room on every phone

Friends join with a code. The drawer sees the word on their own phone, the drawing streams live to everyone, and teammates type guesses for the drawer to accept.

How to play Pictionary online

  1. 01

    Pick teams

Split into two teams that take turns. With 2 or 3 players, switch scoring to Play together and draw for the whole group.

  2. 02

    Draw a secret word

The drawer taps Draw a word and reads it alone. Start drawing hides the word, so you can pass the phone or share your screen.

  3. 03

    Sketch, no letters

Draw with a finger, stylus or mouse. No letters, numbers or talking. Your team shouts guesses before the timer runs out.

  4. 04

    Score and pass

Tap Got it for a point, or Skip if the team is stuck. The other team draws next. Play to an agreed score.

How to play virtual Pictionary on Zoom, Google Meet or Teams

Virtual Pictionary needs two things: a drawing everyone can see and a word only the drawer knows. There are three easy ways to set that up.

  1. Share this page. The drawer opens this page, taps Draw a word and reads it before sharing. Start drawing hides the word, then the drawer shares their screen and sketches with a mouse, trackpad or touchscreen. Guesses come in out loud on the call.
  2. Open a Room. Everyone opens the Room code on a phone or laptop, next to the call. The word appears only on the drawer's screen, the drawing appears live on everyone else's, and guesses are typed, so nobody has to talk over each other.
  3. Paper and a camera. The classic way still works: draw words from the list on paper and hold the sketch up to the camera. Keep the timer on this page running for everyone.

For remote teams, two teams of three to five people keep everyone involved. Rotate the drawer every turn and play to a set score or for 20 minutes.

Pictionary rules for online play

  • No letters, numbers or symbols. Draw pictures only. Most groups allow arrows and a dash for each word in a phrase.
  • The drawer stays silent. No talking, mouthing or acting out the word. Pointing at parts of the drawing is fine.
  • Guess the exact word. Close guesses do not count until someone says the word. The drawer decides, and in a Room the drawer taps the right guess.
  • One turn, one minute. The free round defaults to 60 seconds; choose 30, 90 or 120 in Settings. When time runs out, the word is revealed and play passes on.
  • Score a point per drawing. Teams alternate turns. With two or three players, switch to Play together and keep one shared score.

Ways to play

Change the deck, the timer or who guesses to fit your group.

01

All play

Everyone guesses on every drawing, and the first team to shout the word scores. Good for big groups that get restless between turns.

02

Speed round

Set the timer to 30 seconds and use the Easy deck. Quick sketches, fast laughs, and a full round for every player in a few minutes.

03

Hard words only

Switch to the Hard deck for words like hourglass and solar eclipse, plus phrases such as break the ice. Allow 90 or 120 seconds.

04

Kids' table

Easy words, Play together scoring and a 90-second timer. Younger players draw while older ones guess, then swap.

Everyone on their own phone

Playing from different homes?

Host a Pictionary Room. Players join with a code from a phone or laptop browser, each drawing streams live to every screen, and guesses are typed in. Two or three play together; four or more split into teams. Joining is free; hosting needs Premium.

Pictionary online FAQ

The one-screen round is free and unlimited. In Rooms, joining is free and hosting needs Premium. See Premium.

Can I play Pictionary online for free?

Yes. The drawing round at the top of this page is free with no sign-up: draw a secret word on the screen, then pass the device around or share your screen on a call. In a Room, friends join free from their own phones, while creating and hosting the Room needs CardYard Premium.

How do you play Pictionary online with friends?

Open a Room and share its code. When it is your turn, your phone shows the secret word and a drawing canvas. Your drawing appears live on everyone's screen while your team types guesses, and you tap the right guess to score. Two or three players play together; four or more split into two teams.

How do you play virtual Pictionary on Zoom, Google Meet or Teams?

Start the drawing round on this page and read the secret word before anyone can see your screen. Tap Start drawing so the word hides, share your screen, and draw while teammates call out guesses. If you would rather keep the word on the drawer's own phone, use a Room next to your video call.

How many players do you need?

Two is enough. Rooms hold up to 12 players: two or three play as one team and four or more split into two teams. On one shared screen, any group that can see the drawing can play.

Do we need an app or an account?

No download is needed. Everything runs in a phone, tablet or laptop browser. Friends join a Room with a code and a nickname; only the host signs in.

Can I draw with my finger on a phone?

Yes. The canvas works with a finger, a stylus or a mouse, with four ink colors, undo and clear. Rooms use the same kind of canvas and scale every drawing, so a sketch made on a phone looks the same on a laptop.

What words do you draw?

The free round uses 280 drawable words and phrases in Easy, Medium, Hard and Funny decks, from sun and snowman to solar eclipse and a dog driving a car. Rooms add word types, categories and custom themes.

How is this different from public drawing games?

Public lobbies mix you with strangers and reward whoever types fastest. CardYard is built for your own group: a private Room that only people with your code can join, drawing sized for phones, and team scoring like the board game.
