15 word clue budget

15 words or less rules, scoring, and clue strategy

15 words or less is the tightest common setting of the words or less format. The clue-giver gets fifteen spoken words for the entire round, which means almost every clue has to be a single word. These are the rules most groups use, plus the strategy that makes fifteen words go further.

Use this guide

Make the round work.

  1. 01

    The core rule

The clue-giver may speak fifteen words total for the whole round, not fifteen per target. Every word counts, including articles and filler. When the fifteenth word is spoken the round ends immediately, even mid-sentence, and the team scores only what it has already guessed.

  2. 02

    What counts as a word

Count every spoken word. Hyphenated words count as one. Numbers spoken aloud count as one word each. Sounds, hums, and gestures are usually banned outright rather than counted, because allowing them quietly removes the whole constraint.

  3. 03

    Banned clues

You cannot say the target word, any part of it, or a direct translation. Rhyming with the target and spelling it out are also banned in most groups. Break one of these and the target is discarded with no point, which is the standard penalty.

  4. 04

    Why fifteen changes the strategy

At fifteen words you cannot afford a sentence. The best clue-givers spend one strong word per target and keep a small reserve for the two or three targets that need a second attempt. Trying to describe a target properly will usually cost you the rest of the list.

  5. 05

How to spend a fifteen word budget

Scan the whole list before speaking. Lead with the targets that have an obvious one-word association, bank the easy points, then spend what is left on the hard ones. Skipping a target you cannot land in one word is a real strategy, not a failure.

  6. 06

    Scoring and penalties

One point per target guessed before the budget runs out. Deduct a point or discard the target for an illegal clue. A common bonus is one extra point for clearing the full list with words remaining, which rewards efficiency rather than luck.

  7. 07

    15 vs 20 vs 25 words

Fifteen suits groups who share references and want fast, high-pressure rounds. Twenty is the balanced setting for mixed groups. Twenty-five works for kids, larger word lists, or a slower pace. Switch the budget rather than the word list when the difficulty feels wrong.

Before you start

Questions, answered.

Is it fifteen words per target or per round?

Per round. Fifteen words covers the entire list, which is what makes the format difficult and why single-word clues are the standard approach.

What happens if you go over fifteen words?

The round ends on the fifteenth word. The team keeps the targets it already guessed and scores nothing for the rest of the list.

Can the clue-giver skip a target?

Yes, and it is often the right call. Skipping a hard target to bank two easy ones is a legitimate strategy at a fifteen word budget.

How long should a 15 word round take?

Usually under two minutes. Add a 60 or 90 second timer on top of the word budget if you want the pressure to come from speed as well as scarcity.

Is this an official words or less board game?

No. CardYard is an independent generator for the same limited-clue party format. We supply target words and a clue counter in the browser; you bring the group and the house rules.
