Starts With Ends With: how to play
Find a word that starts with the first letter and ends with the second. For F → T, you could answer “fruit”, “flight”, or “forest”. A pair can repeat a letter: S → S accepts “stars”.

Use 3–45 English letters. CardYard uses a versioned dictionary of American and British spellings, including listed plurals and verb forms. Case, surrounding spaces and compatibility forms are normalized. Proper-name-only entries, abbreviations, phrases, punctuation, digits and accented spellings are excluded. Ordinary words such as “apple” remain valid. A rejected word means it is not in CardYard’s dictionary; it does not mean the word cannot exist.
The source is the English Speller Database release 2026.02.25. Read the dictionary license notices. Reviewed prompt examples form a smaller bank. Pairs are chosen together, so every offered pair has accepted answers.
Sprint
After a three-second countdown, you have 60 seconds. Each accepted word earns one point and gives you another pair. Each word can be used once per run. Wrong answers earn nothing while time continues; a skip costs three seconds. There are no hints or pauses. Free Sprint is unlimited, with Easy, Medium and Hard personal bests.
Ranked Sprint requires sign-in and allows one counted attempt per UTC day. Everyone gets the same Standard course. Your attempt is consumed when its countdown starts. Reloading or disconnecting does not reset the deadline. Server-accepted points remain saved. Today’s and Yesterday’s leaderboards use equal ranks for equal scores. Publication requires your separate public nickname and consent. Outside word solvers cannot be reliably detected.
Daily Five and Practice
Daily Five has two Easy, two Medium and one Hard pair. It is untimed and resumable. The first hint gives an example’s length; the second gives an interior letter. Any valid answer still counts. Reveal resolves a card with an example. Green means unassisted, yellow assisted, and white revealed. Resolving all five advances a completion streak, even with reveals. A board started before midnight stays attached to its original date.
Practice keeps the same pair so you can find more words. A word counts once for that pair. Choose Next pair whenever you want. Personal progress stays in your browser for guests; signed-in players can sync and import guest history. Imported history never creates ranked scores.
Same-screen and room play
Same Screen supports two to eight players or teams sharing one screen. Say answers aloud and manually award the first correct answer a point. A fresh pair appears immediately after a point, while unanswered timed pairs reveal examples. First to five wins. A timer is optional; undo reverses a point and moves to another fresh pair.
Online rooms have up to 12 seats and need two competing players. Premium members host; guests join free. The host can facilitate or compete. Ready up in the lobby; late joiners play in the next match.
In typed rooms, the first valid answer committed by the server wins one point. Round timers can be 15, 30 or 60 seconds after a shared three-second countdown. Results last two seconds before the next pair. An unanswered pair reveals examples and gives no point. Hosts can skip an unresolved pair or pause between pairs.
In spoken rooms, the first buzz locks a ten-second answer opportunity and pauses the pair timer. The host rules Correct or Incorrect. A wrong or expired answer locks that player out for the pair and reopens buzzing. If everyone fails, no point is awarded. Hosts advance results and may undo the last ruling before the next pair, reversing its score and using a fresh pair. Use your group conversation or an existing voice call; this game does not provide voice chat.
Temporary disconnects preserve seats while clocks continue. Explicit departures release a buzz. Fewer than two competitors ends a match as incomplete, without a winner. Room links open in the browser. This game currently supports English web play.
