Play Word Chain With a Friend

Cardyard Word Chain connects compound words and familiar two-word phrases. WATER leads to BOTTLE because “water bottle” is a phrase, then BOTTLE leads to CAP because “bottle cap” is another. It is not a last-letter game or a word ladder.

A two-player compound-word chain

Both players solve the same six-word chain from left to right. The first word is visible, and each hidden word starts with one revealed letter. Every correct answer must complete the phrase formed with the word immediately before it.

Share one phone for a turn-based Duel, create a friendly custom challenge, or open a private Room so both players can race on separate phones. One-phone play is free, Room joining is free, and Room hosting follows Cardyard Premium access.

How to play Word Chain

  1. Choose easy, medium, or hard and add two player names.
  2. Read the first word and the first-letter mask for the next word.
  3. Type the word that forms a familiar compound or phrase with the previous word.
  4. Continue left to right until all five links are solved.
  5. Use a hint to reveal the next letter when the active phrase gets stuck. If the final letter is revealed, that word is skipped with no point.
  6. Win three chains before your friend to take the Duel.

Three ways to play

Use the format that matches whether you share a phone or play from separate devices.

  • One-phone Duel: Take 15-second turns. Correct answers keep control; wrong answers, timeouts, and hints pass control. A fully revealed word is skipped with no capture.
  • Private Room race: Solve private copies of the same chain simultaneously. Your opponent sees progress and hint count, never your words or guesses. Fully revealed words advance without a point.
  • Custom challenge: Write six words or let AI create a chain, lock the answers, hand over the phone, then swap roles for a friendly two-leg recap.

Word Chain example

WATER → BOTTLE → CAP → GUN → FIRE → TRUCK

The links are water bottle, bottle cap, cap gun, gunfire, and fire truck. Each phrase moves forward in the displayed order.

Tips for faster chains

Say the pair aloud

Repeat the visible word and the revealed first letter. Hearing the phrase often makes the missing word click.

Think compounds first

Try familiar objects and joined words before searching for a more unusual expression.

Spend hints deliberately

A Duel hint helps both players and passes control. Revealing a word's final letter skips it without a capture. In a Room the hint stays private and locks input for five seconds.

Word Chain FAQ

Is this the last-letter Word Chain game?

No. Cardyard’s version connects familiar forward compound words and two-word phrases. WATER connects to BOTTLE through “water bottle.”

How many players can play?

This version is designed for exactly two players, either on one shared phone or in a private Room on separate devices.

Is Word Chain free?

One-phone play is free and joining a private Room is free. Hosting a Room follows Cardyard Premium access.

What happens when I request a hint?

A hint reveals the next unrevealed letter. On one phone it helps both players and passes control; revealing the final letter skips that word without a point. In a Room it stays private, locks your input for five seconds, and a fully revealed word advances without a point.

Can I create my own chain?

Yes. Custom Challenge lets an author enter six words or generate a chain with AI, edit it, lock the answers, and hand the challenge to a friend.
