Kings Cup Rules: What Every Card Means (Ring of Fire Guide)

Every Kings Cup card rule in one table, how a game of Ring of Fire works, common house variations, and rule ideas for the Jack.

In Kings Cup, also called Ring of Fire, each card has a rule: Ace is Waterfall, 2 is You, 3 is Me, 4 is Floor, 5 is Guys, 6 is Girls, 7 is Heaven, 8 is Mate, 9 is Rhyme, 10 is Categories, Jack is Make a Rule, Queen is Question Master, and King adds to the King's Cup. The player who draws the fourth King drinks the King's Cup, and the game ends.

Below are the Kings Cup rules for every card in one table, how a game works, the variations groups swap in, and rule ideas for the Jack. Kings Cup is for adults of legal drinking age.

Key takeaways

  • Each of the 13 card ranks has its own rule, from Waterfall on the Ace to the King's Cup on the King.

  • Players draw one card per turn and follow its rule; the fourth King ends the game.

  • Groups change rules often, most of all the 5, 6, 10 and Jack, so agree on the list before the first card.

  • A drink means a sip, any drink counts, and anyone can skip. CardYard's classic deck is free on one phone.

How to play Kings Cup

  1. Set up. Put an empty cup in the middle of the table and spread a shuffled deck face down in a circle around it. Everyone sits around the circle with a drink.

  2. Draw. On your turn, draw one card, show it, and read the rule out loud.

  3. Play the rule. Everyone follows the card. Some rules last one turn; the Mate, Jack and Queen rules carry on.

  4. Pass. Play moves to the left.

  5. Finish. Each King adds a little to the King's Cup. Whoever draws the fourth King drinks it, and the game ends.

Kings Cup works with three or more players. With more than 12, split into two circles.

Can you play Kings Cup on your phone?

Yes. CardYard's Kings Cup online shuffles the deck, shows the rule for each card on screen, tracks whose turn it is and counts the four Kings. Pass one phone around instead of a deck of cards. The classic deck is free with no download, and you can add up to 12 names for turn tracking.

Premium adds a custom deck for your occasion, where CardYard writes 13 new rules and three royal decrees for your group, plus a Spicy 18+ deck for adult groups.

Draw one card: Show the card and read its rule aloud.; Play the rule: Mate, Jack and Queen effects can carry on.; Pass to the left: The next player draws. The fourth King ends play..
For adults of legal drinking age. A drink can be a sip of water or a soft drink, and anyone can skip.

Common Kings Cup rule variations

House rules vary from table to table, and published rule sets disagree on several cards (GameRules.com, Man of Many, retrieved 2026-10-17). Groups most often change these:

  • 5: some groups play Drive instead of Guys. Players pass a "vroom" around the circle, and whoever hesitates drinks.

  • 6: some groups play "drink to your right" instead of Girls.

  • 10 and Jack: some groups swap them, so 10 is Make a Rule and Jack is Categories.

  • Jack: some groups play a round of Never Have I Ever or name a Thumb Master instead.

  • Breaking the circle: in many versions, whoever breaks the ring of cards around the cup drinks.

Pick your versions before the first draw so nobody argues mid-game.

Jack rule ideas for Kings Cup

When you draw a Jack, you make a rule that lasts the rest of the game. These keep things funny without anyone getting hurt:

  • No first names. Say a player's name and you drink.

  • Everyone holds their drink in their left hand.

  • Speak in an accent of the rule-maker's choice.

  • Call the rule-maker "Your Majesty" before speaking to them.

  • No pointing at anything.

  • Say "please" before taking a drink.

  • Compliment the person on your right before you drink.

  • Ban a word everyone uses a lot, like "like" or "literally."

CardYard turns ideas like these into royal decrees: when a King is drawn, the King can issue a decree that lasts until the next King. The first decree of every game is free.

Play Kings Cup responsibly

  • Legal drinking age only. Kings Cup is for adults of legal drinking age.

  • Sips, not shots. A drink means a sip. Any drink counts, so water and soft drinks are fine, and you can keep the King's Cup small.

  • Anyone can skip. Nobody has to drink, and skipping is always allowed.

  • Plan the ride home. Decide how everyone gets home before the first card.
