Stories for kids

In the classroom

Project the game in Read aloud mode and let the class shout out words, or print worksheets for pairs. Writing their own story with blanks is a great follow-up for older students.

On road trips and rainy days

One grown-up reads the prompts, the back seat calls out words, and the story gets read aloud at the next stop. Pass around mode lets older kids take turns on the phone.

What age is it for?

Most kids can play from about age 6 with a grown-up reading, and on their own once they read comfortably. Every Kids and Classroom story is school-safe: no scary or rude content, just silly situations.

How does it help with grammar?

Each prompt names a word type and explains it with a short hint and examples, like "an adjective: a describing word, like fluffy or loud." Kids learn nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs by using them, and the funny result makes them want another round.

Can I print the stories?

Yes. Every story on this page has a printable worksheet: a numbered word list at the top and the story with matching numbered blanks below. Fill the list first, then copy the words into the story.

How do I play with a whole class?

Put the game on a projector in Read aloud mode and let students call out words for each prompt, or hand out printed worksheets in pairs. Older students can write their own stories with blanks for a partner.

Is it free? Do kids need an account?

Playing on one phone or tablet is free with CardYard's shared daily free plays, and there is nothing to sign up for. Printing a worksheet is always free.

Is this the official Mad Libs?

No. Story Blanks is an independent CardYard game with its own original stories. Mad Libs is a registered trademark of Penguin Random House LLC, which does not sponsor or endorse CardYard. The official books are at madlibs.com.
