Black card prompt list

Cards Against Humanity® black cards

Black cards are the prompt cards one player reads aloud each round while everyone answers with a white card. These 120 prompts are written by CardYard in that style, so you can read them straight off the screen, print them, or use them as blank-card inspiration. They are not the official deck.

Use this guide

Make the round work.

  1. 01

    What a black card is

A black card holds the setup: a fill-in-the-blank sentence or a straight question. One player reads it out, everyone else answers with a white card, and the reader picks the funniest response. White cards are the answers; black cards are the prompts that make them land.

  2. 02

How many black cards you need

Counts differ by edition, box, and expansion, so check the box you own rather than a single number quoted online. For a live round the practical number is different anyway: one black card per turn, so 20-30 prompts comfortably covers an evening with a group of six.

  3. 03

Pick 2 and Draw 2, Pick 3 cards

Some black cards have more than one blank. A two-blank card means each player submits two answers in order, and a Draw 2, Pick 3 card means everyone draws two extra white cards first, then plays three. Announce the format before reading so nobody submits a single answer by mistake.

  4. 04

The player who reads the black card

That role is usually called the Card Czar. They read the prompt, shuffle the submitted answers so nobody knows who wrote what, read each combination aloud, and award the round. Rotate the role every turn so everyone gets to judge.

  5. 05

    Question cards versus blank cards

Question-style black cards end in a question mark instead of a blank. They are easier for new players because the answer does not have to fit grammatically, so lead with a few when half the table has never played.

  6. 06

    Writing your own black cards

The best homemade prompts name something specific to the group: a running joke, a shared trip, a coworker's habit. Keep the sentence short and put the blank at the end, because a blank in the middle forces answers to agree grammatically and kills half the jokes.

  7. 07

Keeping a list clean for mixed groups

The prompts on this page are written to work at a family holiday or an office party. If your group wants sharper material, generate it in the app with an adult category rather than reading an explicit list aloud to a room that did not opt in.

  8. 08

    Unofficial and original

CardYard is not affiliated with Cards Against Humanity® LLC and does not reproduce the official card text. Every prompt here is original CardYard writing in the same fill-in-the-blank party format.

Before you start

Questions, answered.

What is a black card in Cards Against Humanity®?

It is the prompt card for the round. One player reads the black card aloud, everyone else answers with a white card, and the reader picks the funniest combination. Black cards are either fill-in-the-blank sentences or direct questions.

How many black cards are in the game?

The number depends on the edition, box, and any expansions you own, so count the box in front of you rather than trusting a single figure online. For play, one black card per turn is all you need, and 20-30 prompts will cover a full evening.

What is the difference between black cards and white cards?

Black cards are the prompts and white cards are the answers. Only one black card is in play per round, while every player holds a hand of white cards to answer with.

What does Pick 2 or Draw 2, Pick 3 mean on a black card?

Pick 2 means the card has two blanks and each player submits two answers in the order they should be read. Draw 2, Pick 3 means everyone draws two extra white cards first and then plays three answers for that round.

Are these the official Cards Against Humanity® black cards?

No. Every prompt on this page is original writing by CardYard in the same fill-in-the-blank format. CardYard is not affiliated with Cards Against Humanity® LLC and does not reproduce the official card text.

Can I make my own black cards?

Yes. Write a short setup with the blank at the end and name something specific to your group, or open the generator and enter a custom theme such as birthday roast, office party, or family holiday to get prompts built around it.

Can I get black card prompts free online?

Yes. This list is free to read or print, and the CardYard black card generator produces fresh prompts for free, with adult categories available on Premium.
