How to Play Cards Against Humanity: Rules and AI Game Guide

1) What is Cards Against Humanity?

Cards Against Humanity (CAH) is a party game built around absurd humor and creativity. The core idea is simple: one player reads a sentence with a blank space, and the rest of the group competes to fill it in with the funniest card from their hand. The reader, known as the “Card Czar,” picks the winning response, and that player scores a point. The fun lies in the unexpected, often outrageous card combinations that come out of each round.

2) Playing with physical cards (quick start guide)

What you’ll need: a set of black prompt cards, a set of white answer cards, 4–10 (or more) players, and a table.

Setup:

  • Deal 10 white cards to every player.

  • Choose a starting Card Czar (the rules suggest silly ways to decide, but you can just pick someone).

Gameplay:

  1. The Czar draws a black card and reads the prompt out loud.

  2. Each other player secretly submits one white card that best (or worst) completes the sentence. Some prompts require two or three cards in order, which makes things even funnier.

  3. The Czar shuffles, reads the submissions aloud, and picks the one they like best. That player scores a point.

  4. Everyone draws back up to 10 white cards. The role of Czar rotates clockwise.

  5. Keep going until someone hits your agreed-upon score (for example, first to 7).

Optional twists (a.k.a. House Rules)

If you want to shake things up, try adding custom rules. These aren’t part of the official game but are favorites among players:

  • The Yard Lamb (ghost player): Each round, deal one random white card from the deck as if an invisible player submitted it. If the Czar picks it as the winner, the ghost player actually scores a point—meaning a made-up character might beat the humans.

  • Gamble points: Before revealing, players can risk one of their points to submit an extra card. If they win, they gain two points instead of one. If they lose, they’re down a point. High risk, high comedy.

4) Tips for better games

  • Read the room: Some groups prefer clean humor, others thrive on chaos. Tailor your cards to the vibe.

  • House rules keep it lively: Toss in bonus points, random draws, or special challenges.

  • Agree on limits: Since CAH can get adult quickly, decide upfront what categories or jokes are off-limits.
