How to play the 5 Second Rule game

  1. 01

    Sit in a circle

Two players is enough, and up to about ten works on one phone. Bigger groups split into two teams that take turns.

  2. 02

    Read the card out loud

The reader draws a card and reads it to the player on their left, for example: Name 3 things you take on a picnic.

  3. 03

    Start the 5-second timer

Tap start as soon as the last word is out. The player has to say three answers before the timer hits zero.

  4. 04

    The group judges

Three reasonable answers in time wins the card and one point. Answers already said this round do not count again.

  5. 05

    Pass the phone

The player who just answered becomes the reader. First to 10 points wins, or play a set number of rounds.

Ways to play

The basic round takes ten seconds to learn. These twists keep a long game night moving.

01

Kids and families

Use the Kids deck and let younger players name 2 instead of 3, or switch to 10 Second Panic for a longer timer.

02

Hot potato

If a player misses, the next player gets the same card and a fresh 5 seconds, but they cannot repeat any answer already said.

03

Teams

Split into two teams. The reading team picks who answers, and a miss lets the other team steal the point with one fast answer.

04

Christmas party

Play the Christmas deck between gifts or after dinner. It covers Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve too.

05

Classroom and ESL

Use the Classroom deck as a brain break. Students answer in pairs, and the class can write extra answers on the board.

06

Video call or separate phones

Host a 10 Second Panic Room so everyone sees the card on their own screen. The Room uses 10 seconds and 5 answers.

Everyone on their own phone

Playing over video or across a big room?

Host a 10 Second Panic Room. Players join with a code and see each card on their own screen. The Room gives 10 seconds to name 5 things. Joining is free; hosting needs Premium.

5 Second Rule game FAQ

How do you play the 5 Second Rule game?

One player reads a card such as Name 3 fruits. The next player has 5 seconds to say three answers out loud. The group decides whether all three count, then the turn passes on. On CardYard the card and the 5-second timer are on one screen, so you only need one phone.

What is the 5 second game?

It is a quick-thinking party game where you name three things in a category before five seconds run out. The pressure makes easy questions hard, and the rushed answers are what make people laugh.

Can you play a 5 Second Rule-style game online for free?

Yes. 5 Second Panic runs in the browser with no download or sign-up. All 340 questions and the 5-second timer are free on one shared phone, with no daily draw limit.

Can we play on separate phones or over a video call?

Yes, with a 10 Second Panic Room. Everyone joins with a room code and sees the card on their own screen. Joining a Room is free, and hosting one needs CardYard Premium. The Room version gives 10 seconds to name 5 things.

What counts as a correct answer?

Agree before you start. Most groups accept any answer that fits the card, refuse answers already used in the round, and let the reader break ties. Being silly is allowed if the group agrees it counts.

How many people can play?

Two or more. It is best with 3 to 10 players passing one phone. For a larger party, play in two teams and let each team choose who answers.

Are there 5 Second Rule questions for kids?

Yes. The Kids and Classroom decks use simple, concrete categories, and every deck is printed on the 5 Second Rule questions page so teachers and parents can read cards aloud without a screen.

Is 5 Second Panic the official 5 Second Rule game?

No. 5 Second Panic is CardYard's own game with original questions. 5 Second Rule® is a PlayMonster game, and CardYard is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by PlayMonster.
